How To Smash Through A Mental Roadblock

Written by Rob J. Temple

We’ve all been there…

You have an urge to be creative.

You want to build something amazing.

You're ready to SMASH your next goal and surge forwards.

Maybe you even have all the energy you need to get things done…

…but you can’t seem to produce anything you’re happy with!

This kind of “mental roadblock” happens to everyone, no matter what you're trying to do.

We just call it different things, like ‘writers block'.

Underlying this question is the real answer to this issue. It’s not so much that you have a “mental roadblock” getting in the way of the solution to your challenges, it’s a creativity problem!

When you’ve sat there and tried coming up with cool ideas for hours on end and nothing has come to pass, it’s time to change up your approach for content generation. (Content generation can mean anything that applies to your goals!)

So how do you change your approach? And what other avenues exist when it comes to thinking up new ideas and content?

Kick-Ass Creativity Techniques:

  • Change your environment

If you’ve sat in the same room trying to come up with new content and nothing has manifested in your mind, then it’s time to change things up a bit. Try using another room in the house that has a different colour scheme and ornaments, pictures etc. Our minds spark creativity when we feed them with new images, sounds, sights, and thoughts.

  • Go for a walk or exercise

Sometimes the best thing to do when your mind is letting you down is to drop the task at hand and move onto something completely different. Going for a walk is like cleansing your palate after a meal. Once your mental “palate” has been cleansed, you make room for new thoughts and ideas to enter.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been out on a walk around my local area and come up with some of my proudest ideas and discoveries. Walks also help you digest and understand information properly. Again, changing your environment gives your mind new influences and inspirations to fuel its creativity.

The same goes for exercising at the gym, at home or anywhere else you fancy breaking a sweat! Working out stress that’s clogging up the mind makes room for creativity to flourish. Exercise is an excellent stress reliever!

  • Take a new angle

How are you approaching your content generation?

Are you coming from a certain persona or angle? Perhaps try looking at how other people in the industry attempt to create their goals, content, and routines. When you step into a new routine your mind alters drastically, it literally forces you to become creative in a new way.

  • Use mind maps

Mind maps are a great way to visualise your entire project as a whole. Sometimes seeing the start, middle, and end of a goal can ignite the creative fires within you to smash through that dastardly mental roadblock!

Using mind maps also helps you to remember that there are always other parts of your project you could work on if one part is holding you back. You can always come back to your current task and spend your time more productively.

Wrapping things up…

Overall, smashing through mental roadblocks all comes down to creativity. If you’re having trouble with the infamous “writers block” or any other form of creativity/procrastination, it’s an indication that you need to change your approach to become more creative.

Go for a walk, change your environment, look elsewhere for inspiration or simply focus on a different task for the time being!
